　確実な命題が存在しないことは、実は、科学の本質です。科学の体系は、厳密に成り立つことが確かな命題から演繹的に構成されたものではなく、仮説を組み合わせながら実験・観測データに基づいて誤差範囲内で検証するという作業を積み重ねた結果なのです。多くの科学者が仮説の正当性について議論を繰り返し、データとよく一致する仮説を取りあえず定説として認めているといった状況です。科学は、確固たる基礎の上に築かれた壮大な建造物と言うよりも、柔軟性を持った知識のネットワークです。このネットワークの要所要所がデータによってピン留めされている訳ですが、このピン留めも絶対的ではなく、誤差範囲内という但し書き付きの暫定的な措置でしかありません。こうした柔軟性・修正可能性が、科学がドグマと化すことを防ぎ、科学の信頼性を保証しているのです。
